The Base: Organic Hemp Seed Oil

Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil — and yes, it comes from the same plant family. Hemp seed oil contains no THC and no psychoactive compounds. What it does contain is one of the most nutritionally balanced fatty acid profiles available in a carrier oil.

Omega-6 (linoleic acid) — the fatty acid your skin needs to maintain a healthy lipid barrier. The skin under your beard doesn’t get the same environmental exposure as your face, but it gets less airflow, more friction, and less direct attention. Linoleic acid helps maintain the barrier’s integrity in those conditions.

Omega-3 (alpha-linolenic acid) — an anti-inflammatory fatty acid. When the skin under your beard is irritated — from friction, from dryness, from the mechanical stress of the hair growing through it — omega-3s help calm the response.

The ratio matters. Hemp seed oil’s omega-6 to omega-3 ratio (approximately 3:1) is close to what the skin produces naturally. This means it integrates with the skin’s own chemistry rather than sitting on top of it. The oil absorbs quickly, delivers its payload, and doesn’t leave a greasy residue. Compare this to heavier oils — coconut, castor — which coat the surface effectively but absorb more slowly and can trap debris against the skin.

The hemp seed oil is from organic farming (marked ➀ in the INCI), verified under the COSMOS Organic standard.

The Active: 1% Cannabidiol (CBD)

Cannabidiol — derived from extract or tincture or resin of cannabis. That’s the full INCI declaration. In plain language: CBD extracted from hemp, present at 1% concentration.

CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system — a network of receptors present throughout your body, including in the skin. Your skin has CB1 and CB2 receptors that influence inflammation response, sebum production, and cellular communication. CBD interacts with these receptors, and the observable effects are calming and comforting — reduced irritation, reduced sensitivity, a skin surface that feels settled rather than reactive.

Why 1%? Concentration matters. Below 0.5%, CBD is unlikely to have a meaningful topical effect — it becomes a marketing ingredient rather than a functional one. At 1%, the concentration is high enough to interact with the skin’s receptors while remaining within the formulation balance that allows the other ingredients to do their work. This is a functional concentration, not a label claim.

For the skin under the beard specifically: this area experiences chronic low-level stress — hair growing through the follicle, friction from the beard moving against clothing and skin, reduced airflow trapping moisture and heat. CBD provides targeted calming support for exactly these conditions. The itch and irritation that many men experience with beard growth isn’t inevitable — it’s the skin responding to stress, and CBD helps moderate that response.

The Protector: Vitamin E (Tocopherol)

Tocopherol — a fat-soluble antioxidant. It serves two purposes in this formula.

For your skin and hair: vitamin E neutralises free radicals — the reactive molecules generated by UV exposure, pollution, and normal metabolic processes. The beard hair and the skin beneath are both vulnerable to oxidative damage, and tocopherol provides a layer of protection that persists after the oil has been absorbed.

For the formula itself: tocopherol acts as a natural antioxidant for the oil, preventing the fatty acids in the hemp seed oil from oxidising (going rancid). This is how an anhydrous formula preserves itself without synthetic preservatives — the vitamin E protects the oil’s integrity over time.

The Carriers: Clean Absorption

Decyl Cocoate — a coconut-derived emollient. Light, non-greasy, and quickly absorbed. It helps the heavier hemp seed oil spread evenly and penetrate the beard hair and skin rather than pooling on the surface.

Undecane and Tridecane — plant-derived hydrocarbons that serve as lightweight carrier agents. They give the oil its clean, dry finish — the reason your beard feels conditioned but not oily within minutes of application. These are the ingredients responsible for the sensory quality: the oil that absorbs like it was designed for men who don’t want to walk around feeling greasy.

The Scent: A Fougère from Natural Essential Oils

Parfum — from natural essential oils. The scent profile is a fougère — one of the classical fragrance families, structured and layered.

Top notes: orange and bergamot. Bright, citrusy, warm. The opening — what you smell in your palms as you apply.

Heart: lavender. Aromatic, herbal, calming. The bridge between the bright opening and the deeper base.

Base: coumarin and oakmoss. Coumarin is sweet and hay-like — the warmth that lingers. Oakmoss is earthy and grounding — the note that gives the scent its depth and longevity. Together they create the dry-down: the scent that’s still quietly present an hour later.

Limonene, Linalool, and Citral — three fragrance allergens naturally present in the essential oils, declared separately per EU regulation. Limonene (citrus character), Linalool (floral/lavender character), and Citral (fresh lemon character). Listed individually so anyone with a sensitivity can identify them.

Why This Formula Has No Preservatives

This is an anhydrous formula — it contains no water. Bacteria, mould, and yeast require water to grow. No water, no microbial risk. The vitamin E (tocopherol) prevents oxidation of the oils, which is the only degradation pathway in a water-free formulation.

When a product claims “preservative-free,” the first question should be: is there water in the formula? If yes, preservatives are needed regardless of what the label says. If no — as with this beard oil — the claim is honest and the formula is stable without them.

What’s NOT In This Formula

No water. This is an anhydrous (water-free) oil formula. No water means no environment for microbial growth, which means no preservatives needed. This isn’t a marketing choice — it’s a formulation fact.

No silicones. The conditioning and shine come from hemp seed oil and the carrier system. No dimethicone, no cyclomethicone.

No mineral oil. No petroleum-derived ingredients of any kind. The entire formula is plant-based.

No synthetic fragrance. Natural essential oils only. Three individual allergens declared per EU regulation: limonene, linalool, citral.

What COSMOS Organic Certification Means

This product carries ECOCERT COSMOS Organic certification — a higher standard than COSMOS Natural. The difference matters.

COSMOS Natural requires minimum natural-origin content and prohibits specific synthetic ingredients. COSMOS Organic requires all of that AND mandates that a minimum percentage of plant-based ingredients come from organic farming. For this product: 62% of the total formula is organic.

For this product specifically: the formulation has been independently audited by ECOCERT Greenlife. The hemp seed oil is verified organic. The overall organic content meets the COSMOS Organic threshold. Synthetic fragrances, petrochemical ingredients, silicones, and GMO-derived ingredients are prohibited.

How to Use — And Why It Matters

Quick Version

Application

Apply to a damp beard, not a dry one. This is the single most important piece of beard care knowledge most men don’t have. When beard hair is damp, the cuticle — the outer protective layer of each strand — is partially open. Oil applied at this stage penetrates the hair shaft and reaches the skin beneath. On dry hair, the cuticle is closed. Oil sits on the surface — it adds shine but doesn’t nourish. The difference between a beard that looks oiled and a beard that feels different to the touch starts here.

Start at the skin, not the hair. Work the oil into the skin beneath the beard first, then distribute through the hair. The CBD and hemp seed oil need to reach the skin to do their work — calming irritation, delivering fatty acids, supporting the lipid barrier. The beard hair benefits on the way through.

Three drops is enough. This is a concentrated formula — 20 ml of oil, not water-diluted product. Three drops for a short-to-medium beard. Four to five for a longer beard. If the beard feels greasy after application, you’ve used too much. The carrier system (decyl cocoate, undecane, tridecane) is designed for rapid absorption. Within a few minutes, the oil should be invisible — absorbed into the hair and skin, doing its work quietly.

How Often

After swimming or extended exposure: salt water and chlorine dry both beard hair and the skin beneath. Apply an extra drop after washing to restore what was lost.
